Chile and Argentina are tied for fifth place in the global ranking of pasta consumption, with an annual per capita consumption of 9.4 kilograms, according to the latest data from the International Pasta Organization (IPO). Italy tops the list with 23.5 kilograms, followed by Tunisia with 17 kilograms.

The Chilean website Pagina 7 reported on Nov. 18 that pasta is one of the popular foods in the world, although some people rarely eat it because of its high-calorie content. This is also proven day after day in Chilean society.

Pasta is a flexible, simple, and easy-to-prepare food, colorful, tasty, and varied, and although more and more Chileans are looking for refined dishes, pasta can still be found on the menus of the vast majority of Chilean households, and its share of the Chilean market is increasing year by year.

The popularity of pasta has also extended to the technological sphere, integrating into e-commerce and becoming one of the  choices for Chileans when ordering takeout. Currently, we have a total of 850 registered restaurants," said Juan Martín López, general manager of Chilean food delivery platform PedidosYa. Through the ordering information of the platform's users, we have found that pasta plays an important role in the Chilean diet, and therefore we strive every day to provide our users with the quality and premium ordering options."

Although pasta has been consumed in Chile for decades, its consumption is still booming. Data from Euromonitor shows that sales of pasta products, such as rice and noodles, grew by 11% in Chile between 2016 and 2017. The study suggests that the entry of many premium brands into the Chilean market, which has improved product quality and competitiveness, is one of the factors driving pasta consumption.

In addition, forecasts related to pasta are positive. Euromonitor International predicted last year that pasta consumption by Chileans will increase to US$302 million in 2021 and that the focus on product quality trumps quantity, meaning that Chilean consumers are willing to pay more for better quality products.

Lopez added: "Lasagna, ñoquis, and fettuccini are the popular products among our users' orders. Users also usually buy desserts such as pizza and tiramisú (tiramisu) to share with family and 'special people'."
