At the Asian Food Bazaar in Tokyo's Shin-Okubo district, instant noodles are prominently displayed near the entrance, where Vietnam's famous instant noodle brand has to be mentioned, the Vietnam News Agency reported.
Japan's imports of instant noodles from Asian countries in 2022 totaled US$57.6 million, the Nikkei Asian newspaper said recently, citing data from Japan's Ministry of Finance. Among them, Vietnam's instant noodle imports alone have exceeded $3.3 million, 5.6 times more than in 2017.
Since Vietnamese instant noodles hit the shelves in the Japanese market, the Vietnamese brand has won the favor of Japanese diners. Customers buying Vietnamese instant noodles are mainly Vietnamese living in Japan and Japanese married to Vietnamese.
Do Thi Cang, owner of an Asian food store on Okubo Street, said, "The popular Vietnamese instant noodle brands are Shou Shou and Dai Machi instant noodles. Hosho instant noodles are popular not only because of their flavor but also because they are spiced. In addition, Hao Hao instant noodles have appeared on Japanese TV channels and have been called the "national instant noodles", and their product recognition in Japan is higher than that of other instant noodle brands."
In recent years, the number of Vietnamese in Japan has been increasing and currently stands at around 500,000 people. With the increasing number of Vietnamese in Japan, more and more Vietnamese instant noodles have entered the Japanese market.
Xie Duc Minh, Commercial Counselor of the Vietnamese Embassy in Japan, said, "Vietnamese culture and even Vietnamese cuisine are very popular in the Japanese market. Japanese people also want to have more dining choices and often change their tastes, not only limited to Japanese food but also savoring the delicacies of many countries, including Vietnamese food. In addition, Japanese people often use convenience foods for breakfast or fast food, and Vietnamese instant noodles are one of their choices."
Nowadays, it is easy to buy Vietnamese brands of instant noodles in Japan. It can be said that although Japan is the birth country of instant noodles, in recent years the country has imported such products from many countries, of which Vietnamese instant noodles are popular among consumers. (END)
